The Somerset Borough Police Department began a Police Bicycle Unit in April of 1998. The Unit consists of 6 patrol officers and 3 Trek Police model bicycles. The bike patrol is being utilized along with regular vehicle patrols. The bike patrol will be used to patrol areas not commonly accessible to patrol cars as well as making the officers more visible in the neighborhood, providing greater crime deterrence and better public relations between police and the community.

    The officer's uniforms are a new look for the department. They are uniforms consisting of polo uniform shirts and shorts designed especially for bike patrols. 

    The cost of initiating the Unit was significantly reduced by donations given to the Police Department from several local business and organizations. The bikes were purchased at dealer cost from a local bike shop, Mountain Sports, Inc.
