The Somerset Borough Police Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Police Officer. Somerset Borough is the county seat of Somerset County and currently employs nearly 20 police officers. The officers work in many specialty functions including patrol, K9, Traffic, Criminal Investigations, crime scene processing, drug crime investigations, and sex and child crime investigations. The Department is highly involved in the community and is committed to training its officers. Somerset Borough has a permanent population of approximately 8,000, but experiences a daily population of 51,000 due to many factors including being the County Seat of Somerset County, an exit on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the heart of a county that is popular and recognized for its sport and leisure opportunities.

The Somerset Borough Police Department hires both full-time and part-time officers. The first step in applying for each position, or both, is to complete an Application for Employment found at this site.
Full-time officers are hired via the Civil Service process which complies with both the laws and regulations of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Borough of Somerset. Testing is not always open, however we will accept your application at any time and, for a period of two years of the date of filing, make a reasonable effort to advise you if testing has been initiated. Part-time officers are not hired via the Civil Service process and you may apply and be considered for this position at any time by completing and submitting the application found at this site.

Hiring Criteria

To be considered for any sworn position, you must either be certified by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers Education and Training Commission (MPOETC) or have successfully completed a MPOETC certified police academy and eligible to obtain MPOETC certification. You must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.

You must have attained high school graduation or its equivalency.

You must have a current driver’s license and be able to attain a Pennsylvania Driver’s License upon appointment.

You must be able to complete a rigorous background investigation that may include, but is not necessarily limited to an examination of your criminal history, educational history, work history, medical examination, physical agility test, psychological testing, polygraph, and credit history.
